Leserbilder Astronomie: Iris, ghost and dust
A year after acquiring the shot of the Iris nebula, I decided to "extend" the field of view of this photo, doing a mosaic that also includes vdB 141. In fact this photo, whose TIFF weighs around 823.9 MB, is a mosaic of two panels: the first contains the Iris and the second vdB 141. For the union of the mosaic I've to do special thanks to Edoardo Luca Radice from PixInsight for helping me; I also thank my amateur astronomer friends, Sicilian and not, for their precious advice during the processing. I hope that the next year I can continue to extend this FOV, taking up the part underneath the Iris. NGC 7023, better known as the Iris Nebula, is a reflection nebula visible in the boreal constellation Cepheus. About 1400 light years away from Earth, it was discovered by William Herschel in 1794. Probably the main star responsible for the illumination of the nebula is the star HD 200775, which is probably surrounded by the nebula, together with other less bright stars born from nebulosa's dust and which form the associated open cluster. NGC 7023 is also probably part of the vast Cepheus molecular nebulous complex, clearly visible in the photo. The Cepheus complex is a vast star-forming region of the Orion Arm, it's rich in giant molecular clouds and associations of very young and bright blue stars. It takes its name from the constellation Cepheus, where is located in. Together with the Orion Molecular Nebula Complex, it is one of the closest star-forming regions to us, although the latter is smaller in size. Together with the complex we also find the object vdB141 or Ghost Nebula: 1470 light years away, it is an isolated Bok globule with a diameter of over 2 light years, where nearby stars make the nebula shine with a brownish colour.
