Leserbilder Astronomie: Omega Nebula panorama
The Omega Nebula (M 17), also known as the Swan Nebula, is a interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen observable to 5000 lightyears away toward the center of our Milky Way in the constellation Sagittarius. It was discovered by Jean-Philippe de Chéseaux in 1745 and is considered one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions of our galaxy. It has a geometry similar to the Orion Nebula, except that instead of be viewed face-on, Omega is viewed edge-on. The open cluster NGC 6618 lies embedded between the nebulosity and causes the gases of the nebula to glow due to radiation from these young stars.
